What is a Stereo Microscope?

 

A stereo microscope has two eyepieces that enable stereoscopic views of specimens, usually at low magnifications between 20x and 50x.  Sometimes referred to as dissecting microscopes, the perception of depth is ideal for studying opaque biological specimens. Stereo microscopes work at a lower magnification than compound microscopes, which are primarily used to view specimens invisible to the naked eye, such as cells. You can adjust the ocular lens inside these eyepieces using the focus knob on the side of the microscope. The eyepieces are typically set at 10x magnification. Many stereo microscopes have both top and bottom lighting. However, bear in mind that not all models do. Top lighting will shine down onto the specimen and reflect light off it. Bottom lighting will light up the specimen through the stage. On either side of the stage are stage clips designed to hold slides or other thin objects in place while you observe.
