Phase Contrast Microscopes

Phase contrast microscopy is a technique used for gaining contrast in a translucent specimen that typically lacks color without staining the specimen. The optics of the microscope convert the differences in the refractive index of the specimen into brightness differences. This will cause the translucent object to appear brighter than the dark background. This is especially useful for observing living or unstained cells in biological and medical research.
