What are the parts of a microscrope?

Knowing your microscope and its functions will help you when it comes to purchasing additional parts or accessories to complement your research. There are several different parts of a microscope all serving specific functions. 


 

Microscope head – this contains the optical parts in the upper part of the microscope such as the eyepiece and lens tube.


 

Microscope arm – the part of the microscope that connects the base to the head.


 

Microscope base – this is the section of the microscope that holds the stage and stage clips of the microscope where the specimen rests. It houses the illuminator, including the light source and collector lens. 


 

Microscope Slides & Cover Slips

A microscope slide is a thin, flat piece of glass used to hold specimens in place while they are being observed. Typically, the microscope is rested on top of the slide and both are placed on the microscope stage for examination. Most microscope slides are 75 by 26mm (3 by 1 inches) and 1mm thick. 


 

Cover slips are small square pieces of glass that cover the specimen placed on the slide to flatten it for better viewing. If a stain or other liquid has been added to the specimen, the cover slip can work to secure it in place. They also serve to protect the specimen from contamination caused by airborne particles or other possible substances.
